February: Charlotte’s Web Comes to Life

Hey all!

Well, this is almost a month late in posting – but I DID actually finish this project the last week of February.. it just took me a while to actually put it up outdoors and get some pictures taken of it. I finally had some free time this afternoon to tackle it.

As you may remember, February’s project was temporary sculpture with the theme friendship. I ended up doing two projects for this – one was the friendship sculpture posted earlier in which a few good friends and I created a nature sculpture from sticks, twigs, and leaves.

The second project was to bring Charlotte’s iconic “some pic” web to life!

The above image is certainly one of the most memorable of E.B. White’s classic children’s book Charlotte’s Web. This story so beautifully captures the idea of true, loyal friendship to me. Being one of my favorite books as a child, the idea of bringing this to life in the form of a temporary sculpture that I could share with the world really got me excited! Below is the finished project – created from dead vines and twigs.

I soaked the dead vines in warm water in order to work with them. Once soft, they are actually quite flexible and strong. I attempted a few methods of tying the twigs on – without any good results – so I eventually settled on hot-gluing them to the vine-web.

This project certainly turned out to be more time-consuming that I thought – probably around 10-15 hours. I actually got pretty attached to this guy after putting all that work into it. It was definitely a bit hard to say goodbye as I left it tied up aside a walking trail just north of my house. Although it helps to imagine someone coming across it – perhaps this book was a favorite of theirs as a child too – and for a moment they will be reconnected to that childlike wonder once more. =)

P.S. If you live in the DFW area and happen to get a kick to go discover this little jewel yourself, it can be found on the southern end of White Rock Park Trail (near the small creek that flows under the trail).

February: Friendship Sculpture Party!

Hey everyone!

Well its just an hour or so until the new month hits – and I’ve just finished up the last details of my final February project. Unfortunately, that one will have to wait until I can photograph it tomorrow..

In the meantime, I am delighted to share with you the other project I did for this month! Or should i say… WE did! In keeping with the cards I chose for the month, being “temporary sculpture” themed on “friendship”, I organized a friendship party this past weekend. A few fabulous friends and I spent a lovely Saturday afternoon collecting sticks, branches, grasses and all things natural at a local hike/bike trail. We gathered everything together in a clearing off the beaten path, next to a softly babbling creek, and began to build!

We weren’t exactly sure what we were doing or quite how we were going to do it, but that was certainly part of the adventure!

What fun to just disconnect from planning a thing out perfectly or having specific expectations for the end result. It felt so free to be out in nature making it all up as we went along – best of all, doing it together.

As a creative person, I am very often wrapped up in doing things in a more solitary way. I’m so used to knowing what I want to make and how I want it to turn out, that it seems I’ve really missed out on the gifts that come from collaborating. Ok, really I’m a bit of a control freak when it comes to creative things!

This month’s project helped me realize that, by letting go of control and trusting others, I not only have an amazing shared experience – but whatever we create becomes something completely new & different than anything I could have created alone. And to make things even better – whatever we create together is infinitely more special… and even if it’s something as temporary as our stick sculpture, the memories we have of creating it together will last a lifetime.

Feeling pretty darn grateful for this 12 Month Project right now – so far it’s given me some really wonderful experiences that I otherwise would have never had. Here’s to temporary sculptures and everlasting friendships! =)

goodnight all my crafty & creative friends!

P.S. A special thank you to Andrew Ridge, Becky Winslow and Micaela Wilson for joining in the fun!

Friendship Breakfast!

Last Saturday morning, one of my especially most cherished friends called me up and offered to go pick up some goodies for us to make breakfast at my place. These days, most of the time I spend with friends is planned ahead of time to make sure we have room in our schedules.. so this spontaneous little visit was a lovely and refreshing treat!

We chatted about the projects going on in our lives right now… and I mentioned my monthly project being temporary sculptures with the theme of friendship. She grinned a glowing smile and pointed out that our breakfast was perfectly fitting for my project. I looked down and we both laughed in delight.. indeed our breakfast was a temporary sculpture (VERY temporary!) and we made it together as friends. How fitting! Here’s to creating things together! =)

Weaving Up Ideas for February!

Hi all!

Well, I have to say I’ve had a bit of a hard time wrapping my brain around this month’s project. I think I spent the first 2 weeks of this month just plain avoiding it. After finishing the January project, I realized I was utterly in love with the craft of needle felting and wanted nothing more than to keep going with it… which I have! Unfortunately the ever-present temporary sculpture still looms… and it must be completed before the month is out!

I’ve researched and brainstormed ideas… continued to be stuck… researched more and probed others for ideas… more stuckness. Nothing was feeling right. Then, about a week ago, a friend of mine brought up an idea that not only says true friendship to me… but also has captured my imagination.

All I can say for now is that it has something to do with the book Charlotte’s Web. In about a week I will post the final project! The suspense! ;)

Bon Journo!

Announcing February’s Project!

Hi everyone!

Well, after a month of all things needle felting, it’s time to switch gears to February’s project! Here’s the cards – not entirely sure if I’m excited about this combo yet… but as the rules go, I am going to make it work! Sooo a temporary sculpture based on friendship – here I come!
