Inspiration: Surpassing Limits & Achieving Goals
So today my inspiration does not come from a sculpture or a photograph – but from my best friend and counterpart, who for the past few years has worked hard, kept an open mind, and grown in so many incredible ways along the road…
Andrew has been working tirelessly towards his goal of becoming a flight instructor this past year… at last, today was the big day – the final check ride as it is called. From 8am to around 4pm he taught lessons, answered questions, talked about regulations, worked out scenarios and did a final flight with the chief pilot. Yes, that’s like an 8 hour final exam. Phew! And at the end of this tiring day – which comes at the end of a tiring year – he has passed and is now a Certified Flight Instructor in helicopters.
I can still remember a little over year ago, when this goal seemed so large and so daunting to this person. I remember it wasn’t easy to commit to finishing this last leg of his flight training – and it took some time. I remember my being frustrated and not understanding why he was having such a tough time. I was pushy (oh those old habits..) and he was stressed and we were really quite grouchy with each other. I remember realizing that being pushy was NOT helping a thing – and then learned instead to be supportive and listen to what he really needed from me. And then I remember watching him begin to tackle it (as we always say… how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!). I remember him taking on a full time job and being so full of worry as to how on earth he was going to get all his studying done with work. But he did (while also kicking quite a bit of butt at work too, I might add). And now, on this big day, he is looking back and seeing that he tackled this thing which seemed so immense and insurmountable before.
It’s a beautiful thing to be there when someone achieves something in their lives that they previously did not see themselves capable of. In that achievement, they expand their own view of themselves. They find a new part of who they are and a deep sense of pride, confidence and inner joy radiates from it. It is no doubt inspiring and infectious, and I count myself lucky to have been here to share in it! I’ve watched as he’s pushed himself to his very limits and kept on pushing – only to realize that his true limits are much farther than what he had ever perceived. Here’s to you, Andrew, I am so excited for you as you embark on the newest chapter of your life. In the words of one Dr. Seuss… “Oh! The places we will go!”
And here’s to you, Crazy-Creative Host Sarah, for being an amazingly supportive friend!
Seriously: Realizing that the grouchy is not helpful and understanding that he needed someone to listen is an impressive thing. He’s lucky to have you.
I recently decided to quit my day job and become a full-time freelance writer — working from home. While I’ve had a few friends question my decision (in a condescending manner), many have understood that I need support and encouragement. I also need them asking critical questions and making sure I’ve thought everything through. So there’s room for both critical thought and support in friendship. In fact, the combination of the two often makes for the best traits in a friend!
I really like this post. Those of you who want a daily dose of literature and everything in between, come check out my blog @ http://thedailydoseofliterature.wordpress.com/
Hi Mikalee!
Thanks so much for reading my post! I could not agree more… having a mix of both support and accountability makes for a truly great friendship! I’m very glad you have many good friends who are providing that on your new journey! Their support is what will get you through the toughest of times – whether by pushing you or letting you lean on them. =)
Wishing you luck on your adventures in full-time writing!
And the self-promoting “comment on every Freshly-Pressed post no matter what” crew descends on your blog… Be careful how you perceive the praise and adulation. Some of these people just seem to spend their entire lives trying to create as many link-backs to their own blogs as they possibly can. They cheapen a lot of great posts and discussions with “makes me want to try it” and “gee that’s swell” comments. Serious personality disorders in the mix… some of it is pitiable.
Thanks for the concerns Tom, very nice of you. As a blogger with a very tiny audience myself – often feeling like I’m blogging to only my boyfriend and a few family members/friends – I totally understand where those people are coming from. Of COURSE we all try to get people’s attention to our blog! Such is a human condition to want some attention. As long as people are giving kind words out and not simply saying “check out my blog” I am likely to be open to seeing what they are up to… I’m viewing this little burst of Freshly-Pressed-ness as a great way to meet some new friends and expand my world!
Thanks for stopping by =)
I agree. Having quit my real world job to stay home and write myself, I have had my share of “questioning looks”. But those that support me, I lean on heavily. I know that any criticism I get from my supporters is with love and encouragement to stay focused and make myself better.
Thank you Sarah for such a wonderful post, and thank you Mikalee for sharing your experience… What a wonderful affirmation!
you might enjoy a poet trying to change the world, as a person who likes a challenge…

Wow really interesting stuff – I’m definitely intrigued! Thanks for sharing =)
I agree. Beautiful work, SF CA WRITER! Thank you for sharing! I’m particularly found of “Lost”.
An inspiring article. I am currently doing something I cannot see myself capable of. After three months passing by, I am still looking for a way out. I think I probably step back when facing problems and keeping doubt myself. Just like you mentioned, it is one bite by one bite to eat an elephant. I need more patience and commitments. It is the consistency that make things different. And, the difference distinguish those from normal human beings. I do not know whether I can have a opportunity to view the world from a helicopter, but I believe I can one day look back my life and feel proud of myself.
Hi Qin
Thanks so much for reading. I think we are all capable of so much more than we realize – but we can also spend a lot of time not trusting that. I’ve definitely struggled with doubting myself – and still do all the time! I think what’s important is that we realize that doubts will always come, and make sure to have supportive people around for such times. And then in those moments of doubt we have a safe place to share our feelings and be validated, as well as someone to remind of our greatness through their eyes. I know that has gotten me through the toughest times of doubt.
Keep on with your dreams and with pushing yourself forward – for taking action in your own life, in big ways and small, will always serve as an inspiration to others. I wish you the best on your journey! =)
I love your post, just goes to show, self believe and determination. Whatever it is you want to do in life you can do it…have no fear!
Victory tastes so good:)
Nice!
You two are lucky to have each other as friends…
Awesome post – note to self….
I remember realizing that being pushy was NOT helping a thing – and then learned instead to be supportive and listen to what he really needed from me. And then I remember watching him begin to tackle…..
This it the thing I too need to remember!
What an uplifting post! It is rewarding to support someone through their trials of deciding then working to accomplish more than they ever thougth possible. Great post!
Haha yes that “grouchy” period was actually a very tough time in our relationship… things weren’t going how I wanted, so I got pushy and turned into quite a control freak. Not to mention since I was trying to control everything it was consuming my mind.. which just made me resentful all around. Yuck! It finally hit me when I realized that he was in such a bad spot and anytime i tried to ask about it he thought I was nagging and got immediately defensive.. It was then that I realized it was ME who created that creation in him, whoa! Time out… he had never done anything like this to me and didn’t deserve that. Time to unlearn some old bad habits!
I can still be a bit bossy and sometimes return back to being a control freak – lol – but now I know when to stop and try to practice letting go of control daily. =) Thanks so much for reading. Oh and you have a food blog! Joy of joys! Always looking for interesting new recipes to try! =D
congrats on being freshly pressed! :D
Thank you Mike! Kinda never imagined having a crazy spike of activity like this – what a ride it’s been! haha
Wow … great achievement. It is inspiring to see others set ambitious goals and achieve them. Thanks for the story.

Do you love to write? We are having a Murder Mystery contest on our blog, and the books proceeds will be given to charity. Contestants write the chapters, and readers vote. Come join in the fun! http://www.the777man.com
Thank you so much! He has been quite overwhelmed to hear of all this attention and I know it means a lot to him (and me!)
hi, inspiring post. Goals always seem distant and impossible to achieve at the start but once reached all the hardships seem worthwhile simply because you suddenly realize the potential within you… enjoyed!! :-)
I love reading about people who take on something so new and crazy later in life. It’s so wonderful to challenge yourself and conquer fears.
I just moved to Tahoe and am pursuing snowboarding this season. I am one of the few people here who didn’t move here because its been their life passion or something they are incredibly talented at. I am one of the few beginners in this town and it is something I have been working at multiple times a week. I’m glad I found your blog because it parallels the vibe I want to channel in my own, as well as my life. Please feel free to follow mine and bounce creative energy off one another. Best of luck to you in all that you strive for.
Just left you a little comment on your blog – loving your exciting new adventures! very inspiring! Thanks so much for reading =)
Thank you for sharing the story. What seems impossible comes around indeed when we don’t give up. Yes, I need this inspiration. :)
What an amazing accomplishment!
Thank you for that encouraging read! :)
What an uplifting story! Too often we are daunted by the “hugeness’ of our dreams, and so we just put off doing them. This was so encouraging-thank you :)
You are so welcome! Thank you for taking the time to read =) All the comments have been so overwhelming for both Andrew and I!
he definitely inspire me also… i was once an instructor myself and i can totally relate to the tiring yet fulfilling moments of being a teacher. kudos to your friend! c:

Inspirational post. Well done to Andrew and to you for telling the story here. Now his dreams can really fly.
Thank you from us both!! =D
I agree with you, always have goals to reach!
I feel encouraged in my own seemingly insurmountable project by your post. Salamat!
Wonderful! I’m so glad it has helped encourage you – keep on going and don’t give up! =) Thank you for taking time to comment!
Your story made me pause and reflect on some seemingly daunting things I’ve recently accomplished and others that I’ve only just started. It’s heartening to be able to look back with a sense of accomplishment and enjoy the journey for what it was, peaks, sprints, stumbles and all. :) That makes it easier to look ahead with optimism, wondering how I’ll one day remember these moments along my journey to a new me in new places. Thanks for sharing!
You are very welcome! We’ve both been so touched by all the people who have read this post and commented about how it has touched them in some way. Thank you for your kind words and I wish you luck on the challenges you have ahead.. you will get there!
Great example of how determination, hard work and grit gets you there !

This is very inspirational. It helped me realize something. I thank you for making this post! :)
Very Good. Very inspirational. Nothing I can add…you and him, told us and showed us all, how to do it. Thanks. Keep Blogging. Keep Writing.
In the (non-competitive) cycling world, one witnesses often, the achievement of other people’s goals by finishing a ride/distance that they’ve never done before..under their own power.
Cycling also inspires me more about seeing my world from a different perspective. A bike takes you into corners where cars and motorcycles are not allowed/not possible. Anyway speeding by on a car or by motorcycle, you miss out alot of stuff.
Congrats
Great post! Congrats on being Freshly Pressed!
Wow, so glad I stumbled upon this. You write really well, and I love your positive voice :)
That is so awesome, congratulations to Andrew and you for a really well written post.

success story is nice. :)
Wonderful post and kudos to both of you – to you for learning the skill of being a supportive friend, and to Andrew for persevering and achieving his dream! As Carl Sandburg said, “Nothing happens unless first a dream.” Along the way, however, we all need truly supportive people who can help keep us focused when we lose our way, and motivated when we become discouraged. The dream starts with one, and is achieved by the strength of many. Everything is possible when you believe, isn’t it?
Great post!
hi please check out my blog http://tiny.cc/uyl3l
Congratulations! hope you all a fruitful life.
Thank you from both of us!
Many thanks for this wonderful post – it’s just what I needed today. A hearty congratulations to your partner!
Thank you Jenny! We’ve both been so overwhelmed with all the people who are commenting on this post. It means so much to us that it has meant something to others! =)
Bite by bite…drop by drop…I love it!!
very nice……
Thanks for the inspiration!
Good for andrew. My bf’s a pilot and his name is Andrew, and trust me, it aint easy being the other half of a pilot. lol. I’ve seen cranky quite a few times; each time he goes for a new typerating.

Haha now if your name was also sarah that would be crazy! lol
I hear ya – I’ve been his guinea pig for months now for teaching his lesson plans. I know more about helicopters than I ever imagined I would learn! Haha but its been so fun and really cool to be dating someone who’s interests and knowledge is SO different from my own… even with the crankiness ;) haha. Thanks for reading!!
Awesome post. Watched my husband go through his fixed wing training and did not have a clue what he was going through until I started my flight training a year ago. Pushing through your own limits is really a great way to describe the frustrations of flying.
Thanks alyboo! And kudos to both of you for making it through your flight training! =)
I have to say I enjoy the post – it inspired me. As a dad of two I often find myself thinking that I will never accomplish what I set out to do. I a world where everything is expected now, today and I can’t wait – it is nice to hear about a struggle that faced challenges, that were meet with determination and success. Congrats, well done and thank you. It truly helps to read about his [ your ] success. Happy flying.
This is truly awesome stuff! In life, sometimes we encounter things that are bigger than ourselves and as you said all we can do is take it one step at a time and work as hard as we can for the best possible outcome. He is an inspiration to us all!

This is a pretty inspirational story that I wanted to share (it even quotes my favorite Dr Seuss book). Plus its the first time I’ve “re-blogged”. Check it out!
Your post was so inspiring! Congrats to your friend Andrew, and I’m sure he really appreciates having a great friend like you.
All beauty, all things that are creative, all acts of greatness, come as a reflections of our Lord’s Love for us. We are but mirrors, reflecting either the good or bad that is in our hearts.

It was a inspiring post. We all have one live to live, one live to do what ever we want to do in life. Then why not to try to do something really different. We may not succeed while doing so; but at least we can try and give it our best shot. Your post says it all . Thank you for this wonderful inspiring post.
You are welcome! Thank you for reading!

it was inspiring. Thank you. :-)
Oh i love that quote! Thanks so much for stopping by!
Firstly congrats to Andrew for his accomplishment. And kudos to u for being with him… Sometimes all we need to cross the chasm is a lil push nudge inspiration motivation or sometimes just knowing that someone is around.. And checked ur blog.. Loved ur ideas creativity n articulations and expressions.. What I liked most is that many creative people say that they don’t work as per a plan n deliver when the creative juices flow.. But I guess u have great results and personal satisfaction by planning n having self defined objectives.. Wonderful! Also trying n learning something new peridically is one way to nourish ur spirit n keep the child within love… Good luck n best wishes for 2012
Oh my, We’ve both been so surprised by all the positive feedback from others – it means so much to us! I wasn’t doing much at all with myself until last year – it seems doing a project a month was a simple and easy enough framework to help me get things done. I definitely learned a LOT about structuring and organizing my time last year (and about what happens when I don’t! lol)
Thanks for reading!
I’m with you 100%. I love my daily read and those who follow my blog are equally appreciated. It makes it all worthwhile. Wise words.
Oh its beautiful, after reading this blog myself was urged.
Thanks for writing such inspiration speeches. :) In this cynical world we live it, it’s writers like you who give it a brighter hue.
You know I almost didn’t post this! I’ve written stuff like this so many times and then never posted it – thinking it was cheesy or too emotional or something. Apparently, I was very WRONG! Thank you for letting me know that someone out there is appreciating – I will definitely be adding more posts like this to my blog from now on! =)
that is great. It is very nice post.

Awesome! The both of you are to be congratulated :D Your post is a true example of sticking to a goal no matter what.

Other people’s achievements sometimes serve as inspiration for us all. Thanks for sharing.
Congratulations to Andrew on becoming a flight instructor. I can only imagine the hours and hours of study and practice that must have went into achieving that goal.
Also, thanks so much for the reminder about how tasks that are initially daunting can be achieved, if you but approach them methodically and take them one day at a time. My girlfriend and I are both trying to achieve a lot of different things right now, and sometimes we tend to get really grouchy ourselves, so your post is a great reminder about the value of being supportive versus complaining and holding someone back. It was just the read I needed on this cold Sunday in NYC, and I thank you.
You are very welcome! It means so much to both of us to hear this little post mean something to other people. We’ve had a lot of learning experiences in our 2 1/2 years together so far – there were times we weren’t sure we’d make it. Times when his bad habits were a problem for me, and times when mine were a problem for him. We have always talked thru things though and been open to learning new habits that will serve each other better. I wish you both luck on the things you are working towards and on being the friend each other needs through it all! =)
Very inspirational! how wonderful to have the support of someone to help you reach your goal. I am embarking on my own journey of stepping outside the boundary and comfort zone this year. I manage to achieve lots of little goals but this one is a biggie. Thank you.
Thank you for reading dear queen of chocolate! As a chocoholic myself i’m definitely excited about your blog! Wishing you the very best on your journey this year and that it takes you to many new and exciting places! =)
Great post. I can say with authority that I understand, as my husband came back from an especially emotional trip to help our friend through the loss of his wife, with the plan to put on a benefit golf tournament. It seemed so daunting in the beginning and not without bumps, but we succeeded! We both felt like we had achieved so much more than raising money, we gained the insight we could do something meaningful to others and ourselves.
That is wonderful! Kudos to both of you for taking on and completing such a goal! It really is an amazing feeling to do something you didn’t think you had in you! Thank you so much for stopping by =)
That’s a great story! Awesome that you were able to recognize how you could better help your friend. Funny how people communicate what they need from us but when we don’t listen, we can waste our time and theirs.
That’s awesome. I can barely will myself to work, let alone to learn to fly! Ambition completed. Congrats!
As someone who has had a similar experience, these lines were especially touching: “It’s a beautiful thing to be there when someone achieves something in their lives that they previously did not see themselves capable of. In that achievement, they expand their own view of themselves. They find a new part of who they are and a deep sense of pride, confidence and inner joy radiates from it. Thank you for such a great post.
Helicopters smelohopters!!! I’m not impressed one little bit. My brother was “Hangar Chief” at Weymouth Naval Air Station but in the beginning he was a helicopter mechanic. We used to visit him in at Cherry Point N.C. when he was there. I remember sitting in the cockpit of a Phantom something or other and fooling around with all the gizmos and stuff. My brother told me not to touch the one that would shoot me through the hangar ceiling but I really wanted to to see if it really would but I didn’t. I knew I wouldn’t get ice cream on the way home if I did. I guess he came to trust me cause next thing I knew his friend was taking me over the ocean in the same plane and he asked me if I wanted to try it now. I said: “no thank you sir!!!” So he turned the air craft over again and I must say I was quite surprised to see how quickly we had come down to 6 inches from the surface of the ocean and going wicked fast. It’s a good thing the chop that day was only 2-3 inches with an occasional 5 inch swell. I still think I got some ocean spray in my nose though but Captain so and so said maybe it was my brains. I thought that was funny but was way too scared to laugh. Then, when we were way way back up in the sky he told me that if I didn’t learn how to fly this thing that we surely would crash and my father would be very upset and I probably wouldn’t get ice cream for a long long time. Turns out it was really easy and I did a figure 8 by accident. Those planes are funny….they do anything you tell them to do and they respond to the slightest and most subtle commands….I let the Captain land her though. My brother told me to never let anyone know I had flown a plane that men spend so much time trying to learn to fly cause the Marines like to make it look difficult to discourage non-committed flyers…like a secret club. He showed me the handshake and then my father and I went for ice cream…I doubt if many 6 year olds ever had that much fun…and it wasn’t even my birthday….that was better when my brother introduced us all to the “Blue Angels”….that was fun too but I’m not supposed to talk about it cause it’s supposed to be really hard to do what they do but they say that the real secret is just having the courage to do it….I would be impressed by the helicopter pilot chief’s story though if he were playing a guitar while flying one without missing any notes…like Shawn Colvin can….
this is really amazing ! the picture is great , but the story is priceless. CONGRATS :)
Nice post! I am proud of Andrew and his accomplishment. You grew as well in learning to be supportive. You both are an inspiration. Keep it coming!
That’s a great story!!!!
Great post and inspirational! I love the analogy of how to eat an elephant. Sometimes it just seems so big that it seems impossible but when we take it one step at a time it is possible. I needed this post! Thanks and best of luck to your friend as he continues to grow in what he loves!

This was such an inspiring post and it came at the perfect time. :) Thank you so much for sharing this story. I hope you guys enjoy this new chapter! CHEERS!
Thank you for reading! We’ve been in overwhelm about how this little post has touched people. And to think, I almost didn’t post it. Thank you for taking time to comment! =)
Wow, the title caught my eye straight away and the post truly justified it!
This is a huge inspiration for me at this time!
I think it is amazing how you have seen and realised both how Andrew has grown himself, for the good of himself as well as how his journey has made you observe things and reflect on it yourself.
The best inspiration comes from people who work hard, are likeable, are able to appreciate all the struggles with humility and are able to value their achievements but still connect with people just like themselves – you both are very inspiring for anyone in any kind of relationship – a couple, friendship, family, yes… very inspiring indeed!
Thank you for this post! :)
Oh my gosh – so many kinds words! Thank you! I almost didn’t post this – as I don’t usually post lofty inspirational writing on the blog so much… but apparently I should start doing so! I’m so glad it came to you at a good time – and wish you the best on your journey! Thank you for taking the time to leave such a wonderful comment – it means a lot to both of us!
2012 is the year! I have high hopes for 2012, but boy is it going to be a lot of coffee (or, rather, green tea) and hard work!
Truly inspiring and written so well. You have motivated the inner souls of a lot of people by telling this story…
oh my – thank you for the kind words! I really had no idea this post was going to just take flight like it has. I almost didn’t even post it! Apparently I should write from the heart more often. =)
Congrats for achieving something that seemed so far away. Enjoy your blog also. Thanks for sharing.
What a beautiful post! It’s always a blessing to be there to see someone else living their dreams – especially when that someone is someone you really love. :) Thanks for including your part, even the negatives (being pushy – that’s not so bad!) it’s encouraging and makes it seem like a real human wrote this, and not a hallmark card. :) I look forward to reading more inspirations from you!
Thank you so much Rachel! I’m glad you enjoyed it. Honestly I’ve always been a bit nervous about putting stuff like this out there – but everyone has been so encouraging, I suppose I must do more! All my best!

So inspiring. Congratulations to Andrew for achieving his elephant-sized goal and to you for being such a steadfast friend. A pleasure to read!
Congratulations to Andrew! :)
I just wanted to share my inspiration^^
My inspiration is love<3 When I'm in love, I have the motivation, inspiration and optimism to do anything which really isn't good when I'm a Christian. God should be my motivation but it's the person I love which I've been trying to change my focus back on God and right now, that's my goal^^
:)
Wow, great inspiration. Thanks for sharing.

Never in my life have I been prouder to call someone brother. I don’t have a lot of guy friends, and in Drew, I don’t see him as just a friend, he is my brother. After all the work, the pay off is here. Brother, I am proud of you. As terrified as I am of flying, you can be my pilot anytime. I love you both and thank god every day that I have you in my life.
You ROCK!! Thank you so much I will make sure he reads this!!! =)
Reblogged this on Agent Charlie.
Inspirational, thanks. Can really relate to the idea of finally beginning, and putting effort into, something you’ve wanted to do forever. I’ve just acquired a second-hand piano and am starting piano lessons this week – after about 15 years of just thinking about it! Taking those first steps wasn’t really that hard – what makes us procrastinate for so long over things that would make us really happy if we just got on and did them?
I love this – congrats on finally getting started with piano lessons! How great! I’ve been wanting to play drums ever since I was a kid… I think its going to need to happen this year finally! ;)
It is strange how scared we can be of something that – once we are into it – gives us such satisfaction!
Thanks for reading! =)

It’s like you get me on a deep, philosophical level.
Sarah,
My parents both got their private pilots’ licenses and then commercial ratings a few years back. I have an inkling of what this goal meant and how huge it is. Congrats to him!
I did my first marathon last year, and I think it’s huge goals like this that make life worth living. Overcoming the odds does wonders towards making you feel like you can accomplish anything!
Nothings impossible if you set your heart on it! Nice post!

This is heart warming! the support and the dedication is what makes most stories worthwhile.. i love what u have written specially the part about the elephant!
Great article. Thanks for the inspiration.
I am newly inspired.
